Before you start
You'll need to be at least 17 and hold a valid provisional driving licence before you can start learning to drive a car. You can apply for a provisional driving licence 3 months before your 17th birthday. Applications can be made online or with application form D1 available from the DVLA or at a Post Office™ branch.
You don't need to pass your theory test before you can start your driving lessons. In fact, you will have a much better chance of passing your theory test if you've taken some driving lessons before you attempt it.
Your first driving lesson
Call me on 0800 112 0049 to book your first driving lesson. If you have applied for your licence in good time, your first driving lesson could even be on your 17th birthday!
I'll need to see both parts of your licence before we begin your first driving lesson. I'll also check that you can read a number plate at 20.5 metres (old style number plates) or 20 metres (new style number plates), this is the test the examiner will do at the start of your driving test. If you need glasses or contact lenses to read a number plate then don't forget them! And always wear them when driving.
Practicing with friends and family
If you are able to practice with friends or family between driving lessons remember:
- Any friends or family members you practice with must be over 21 and must have held a full driving licence for a car for at least 3 years;
- You must display 'L' plates on the front and rear of the car;
- Make sure you are insured to drive the car.
Drive iQ PRO is the NEW way to learn to drive.
It is a structured course of 5 units including motorway and night driving. Whilst teaching you all the basic car control skills you'll need to pass your test, Drive iQ PRO takes you to the next level by improving your mental aptitude for driving.
At the end you'll be rewarded with access to the best insurance deal for young drivers where you could save hundreds of pounds! You can also gain a BTEC level 2 qualification. It's free to enrol, so there's just the cost of lessons and an optional £50 if you require the BTEC certification.
