Before you start

Driving licence You'll need to be at least 17 and hold a valid provisional driving licence before you can start learning to drive a car. You can apply for a provisional driving licence 3 months before your 17th birthday. Applications can be made online or with application form D1 available from the DVLA or at a Post Office™ branch.

You don't need to pass your theory test before you can start your driving lessons. In fact, you will have a much better chance of passing your theory test if you've taken some driving lessons before you attempt it.

Your first driving lesson

Young woman with car keys and L plates Call me on 01405 769114 or 07966 421017 to book your first driving lesson. If you have applied for your licence in good time, your first driving lesson could even be on your 17th birthday!

I'll need to see both parts of your licence before we begin your first driving lesson. I'll also check that you can read a number plate at 20.5 metres (old style number plates) or 20 metres (new style number plates), this is the test the examiner will do at the start of your driving test. If you need glasses or contact lenses to read a number plate then don't forget them! And always wear them when driving.

Practicing with friends and family

L plate on a car If you are able to practice with friends or family between driving lessons remember:

  • Any friends or family members you practice with must be over 21 and must have held a full driving licence for a car for at least 3 years;
  • You must display 'L' plates on the front and rear of the car;
  • Make sure you are insured to drive the car.

Recommended Study Material

You can improve your skills by studying, giving you a better chance of passing your driving test in fewer lessons, saving you more than the cost of the books and DVDs. It's important to ensure you buy the very latest edition, whilst I make every effort to keep these links up to date, I can't guarantee that they are the latest editions. If you are in any doubt then just email me and I'll find out for you.
